Auf der einen Seite der Installation ermöglicht der Splitter, zwei Patchkabel von einem Hub oder Switch an einen Port eines Patchpanels anzuschließen; auf der anderen Seite der Installation kann der Splitter über einen Wandanschluss an eine einzelne Cat5-/Cat5e-Netzwerkleitung angeschlossen werden, die dann aufgespalten und an zwei unterschiedliche Geräte angeschlossen werden kann. Patchpanel und Wandanschluss werden mit einem einzigen Cat5-/Cat5e-Kabel verbunden.
