They leave a strong and intense stroke, are easy to smudge and can be removed with kneadable eraser. The amount of binder has been reduced to a minimum that just ensures the adhesion of the pigments to the sheet. The colour is therefore extremely pure and luminous; this property is further enhanced when more or less rough paper is used.
